Choosing an Install Location
1. Choose a location that allows for an acceptable drain route, into a drain that can handle the water flow and has an air gap. Also make sure the location is easily accessible for salt loading and servicing.
2. Use the graphic below to determine the appropriate position based on a city or well water source:
Plumbing the Unit
1. Unpack and position the unit so the water will come IN and OUT through the labeled ports on the valve head. Turn off the main water supply and shut off the electric or fuel supplying the water heater. Open high and low faucets to drain the house pipes.
2. Remove the top cover and wire connections from PWA. Set to side to keep from getting damaged.
3. Load media into the unit if applicable (Units APF and EIV only). Visit our Media Loading article for directions. Remember that some filters suggest Soaking the Media before pressurizing.
4. A bypass valve is not included, but always install one for homeowner convenience. The bypass can be flipped upside down if the home plumbing comes from below.
5. Lubricate o-rings and connect tank filter to bypass assembly. Attach black retainer clips and check they are fully engaged by giving the bypass assembly a small tug away from the valve.
6. If home has copper plumbing or other metal, be sure to include a grounding wire:
7. Install the drain hose (not included). The recommended size is 5/8" or 3/4" to handle the drain flow. At the drain location, be sure to add an air gap (1 1/2") and secure the drain hose to prevent whipping during regeneration:
Pressurize and Purge
*To avoid water or air pressure damage, follow these steps in order*
1. Bypass the softener and open two or more cold-water faucets downstream of the unit.
2. Slowly open the main water supply and run water until you receive a steady flow. Repeat with hot water.
3. Check for leaks at the valve and bypass assemblies.
4. Put unit into bypass and advance to Backwash (first cycle).
5. Open bypass and let the system backwash until the drain line runs clear. Advance the valve twice to return to the Service position.
Programming
Visit our Programming instructions for assistance setting up the electronics.
Cycle Check
A cycle check reduces air and discoloration in the water, and allows us to check that the drain can handle flow.
1. Remove the top cover and observe the cam and switch operation during valve rotation. Use the system's electronics to advance through each cycle of the regeneration - Service, Backwash, and Rinse. Note: AIV units - Service, Backwash, and Air Draw.
Installation Wrap-up
1. Sanitize the unit and clean up the installation area.
2. Turn on the electric/fuel to water heater if applicable.
3. Apply the company sticker and test the water.
4. Inform the customer on how to program the unit.
5. Show the customer how to use the bypass assembly. Mention there may be air in the lines initially, but it will work itself out.
